We had our eyes on Polly at the shelter for a couple of weeks, but before we could bring her into rescue, we needed to find the right foster home. When that day finally came, we couldn't wait to go pick her up.
Then came an unexpected twist.
Just before we arrived, Polly tested positive for heartworms—a completely preventable disease that requires months of treatment, strict activity restriction, and significant expense. Suddenly, we had a difficult decision to make.
The truth is, there wasn't really a decision at all.
By then, we were already completely smitten with Polly, and there was no way we were going to leave her behind. Once her incredible foster family assured us they were fully committed to helping her through the long treatment and recovery, we happily loaded her into the car and headed home.
Heartworm treatment typically takes 4–6 months, and during that time Polly will need plenty of rest and a calm environment to ensure a successful recovery. We are accepting adoption applications now, provided her adopters are willing to continue her treatment with our veterinarian in Manassas, VA, and commit to the exercise restrictions she'll need until she's medically cleared.
So far, Polly has proven to be the sweetest little snuggle bug. She melts into your arms, soaks up every bit of affection, and is quickly winning the hearts of everyone she meets. She's even been indifferent to the cats in her foster home. We can't wait to share more about this precious little nugget as we continue getting to know her. We have a feeling she's going to make one very lucky family incredibly happy.
