Meet Radish! He's pretty rad! ;)
Some dogs arrive at a foster home cautiously, taking their time to settle in. Radish apparently missed that memo. This happy-go-lucky 15-pound Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mix pranced straight out of the shelter and into our Safehouse as if he'd already been here for years. His tail was wagging, his spirits were high, and he was ready to start enjoying life immediately.
At 3-4 years old, Radish has mastered the art of being both active and easygoing. He's the kind of dog who can happily join you for a long walk, a backyard hangout, a cozy evening on the couch, or pretty much whatever else the day has in store.
Daily Life with Radish
Radish is wonderfully adaptable and rolls with whatever schedule the day brings. His foster typically walks him three times a day, with at least one longer walk of 30 minutes. If they're feeling ambitious, he'll happily join them for an hour-long adventure— and even then, he usually seems ready for more. After especially long walks, he might reward himself with a brief nap before he's back to supervising household activities.
One funny quirk? Radish apparently believes that bathrooms belong outdoors and away from the backyard. While he'll happily spend time outside, he strongly prefers taking care of business on his walks and often manages multiple potty breaks throughout the day. He's also been completely reliable in the house, holding his bladder overnight and never having an accident.
During the day, Radish enjoys hanging out with everyone in the family, although Mom is definitely his favorite person. At bedtime, he quietly settles down beside Mom's bed on the floor, perfectly content to sleep nearby and keep watch over his people.
Personality
If you're looking for a dog who loves affection without becoming your shadow, Radish may be your perfect match.
He absolutely adores attention, pets, and snuggles. He's always happy to accept affection and enjoys being around his people. At the same time, he's refreshingly independent. He's not a Velcro dog who follows you from room to room, and he doesn't spend his day whining when you're out of sight. He simply enjoys company and likes knowing his people are nearby.
From the moment he arrived, Radish has been friendly, confident, and easygoing. There wasn't much of an adjustment period— he settled in almost immediately and has continued to show what a lovable, well-balanced dog he is.
Dogs, Cats, and Kids
Radish has been living in a busy household that currently includes grandparents, teenagers, other dogs, and a cat. He has handled the activity beautifully.
He gets along well with the people he meets and would likely do fine in a home with respectful children. While he and the resident cat haven't exactly become best friends, the relationship is mostly driven by the cat's desire to remain firmly in charge. In fact, one of the few times Radish gets vocal is when the cat decides to remind everyone who's boss. He's an option for a home with a dog-savvy cat who knows the dog/cat ropes!
Exercise and Adventures
Radish is playful, energetic, and always ready for a walk. He walks nicely overall, but he does have one of the strangest leash habits we've ever seen.
We're fairly certain someone taught Radish a trick at some point in his life because he insists on carrying his own leash. That's right—he wants to hold it himself.
When it's time for a walk, Radish gets excited and often grabs the leash in his mouth before they're even out the door. For the first few minutes of most walks, he proudly carries it himself, occasionally shortening the amount of leash available for the human on the other end. His foster family has even let him try this in the backyard, where he appears perfectly happy "walking himself" around.
House Training
Radish appears fully house-trained. He has never had an accident in foster care, doesn't use potty pads, and reliably waits to go outside. He happily sleeps through the night and has excellent household manners.
Why Adopt Radish?
Because dogs like Radish don't come around every day.
He's affectionate without being clingy, active without being overwhelming, friendly without being demanding, and adaptable enough to fit into a wide variety of households. Add in his charming personality, excellent house manners, and his hilarious determination to walk himself, and you have a truly special little dog.
Radish came into foster care happy as a clam, and he's stayed that way ever since. Now all he needs is a forever family to share that happiness with.
