Animal Information: Davey is an estimated 1-year- 3-month-old neutered male Hawaiian Hound mix currently weighing approximately 35 lbs. He was a stray intake to Kauai Humane and on a foster relief stay with shelter volunteer Andrea, he let his beautiful personality shine! Andrea shared that in foster care he learned to walk on a leash, showed wonderful social skills and play with other dogs and was housetrained and crate trained. He reportedly loves kids and is not at all fixated on cats. He's smart, makes great eye contact, and an all around gem! Davey will be joining Dog Gone Seattle and we look forward to getting to know him in foster care.
Foster Profile:
Davey is an absolute gem of a dog. His ideal family will be active and have the patience to coax him out of his shell as he adjusts to change. A resident canine playmate would be preferred, but he would also be fine as a solo dog. He is a great brewery dog and will make a wonderful adventuring or running buddy.
He walks well on a leash, takes treats with a very gentle mouth, and gets along with all dogs while responding to inappropriate behaviour with a very appropriate amount of correction. He is social with new people, but can be skittish with sudden movements. He was calm meeting a toddler and doesn't mind being hugged.
We're working on building his confidence, food motivation, and general obedience. He does well with regular potty breaks, with the occasional accident indoors—we're working on it and he's made lots of progress so far! He cries a little when I leave the house without him, but quickly settles nicely into his crate.
Davey enjoys zooming around the yard and trying to get dogs to chase him. He's learning to play with toys, and seems to enjoy chasing balls, tug, and destroying stuffies. He loves long walks with lots of interesting smells, and will likely be a great candidate for scentwork. He happily snoozes on a dog bed or the crate after a morning walk. He's also learning that he enjoys cuddles on the couch! His signature moves include resting his nose on laps or arms for attention, gentle snuffles on legs when we get home, and making ridiculous faces / barks while trying to get people or dogs to chase him.
