Punkin: A Smart Puppy Who Just Needed Direction Punkin is a 6½-month-old mixed breed who is back with us after her previous home struggled to meet her needs during one of the most important stages of her development. She was adopted as a young puppy and, like many dogs her age, began testing boundaries as she grew. Without consistent structure and leadership, she started showing behaviors like resource guarding and reactivity in high-pressure situations, particularly in a busy home with young children. So we did what we always do. We got her evaluated by a professional. And here’s what matters:Punkin is not a broken dog.In her evaluation with professional trainer Richard “Rick” Alto, she showed exactly what we suspected: She is extremely smart and highly trainable She knows and performs basic obedience commands like sit, down, come, place, and heel She is eager to learn and wants to please She responds quickly to clear direction and consistent feedback Her resource guarding was assessed as mild and manageable when handled correctly In a structured setting, Punkin settled quickly, worked through new commands, and handled corrections appropriately. She showed the ability to regulate herself under pressure, which is a huge win for a dog her age. What she does need is clarity.Punkin is a dog who will absolutely thrive with: Consistent structure and routine A confident handler who follows through Clear boundaries (no guessing games) Continued training and engagementRick’s recommendation is simple:Give her guidance, hold her accountable, and she will rise to the occasion. And we’re already seeing that.Punkin is currently working on leash manners, impulse control, and building consistency in her commands. She’s making progress quickly because she finally has what she was missing: leadership.Because of her previous environment, Punkin is looking for: A home without young children An adopter who understands dog behavior and is willing to continue training Ideally, a balanced resident dog who can model appropriate behaviorLet’s be clear about something:Punkin has never caused injury. She has shown communication signals like growling and air snapping, which are exactly what dogs do when they feel unsure and haven’t been given clear guidance. That’s not a failure. That’s a dog asking for direction. And now she’s getting it.Punkin is the kind of dog who, with the right person, is going to turn into something really special. She’s engaged, capable, and already proving that she can learn fast when expectations are clear. She doesn’t need saving. She needs someone who understands what it means to actually raise a dog.If that’s you, you already know. This dog is up to date on vaccinations and is spayed or neutered. (Please note: Puppies under 3 months old may not be sterilized prior to adoption. If this is the case, your adoption coordinator will provide guidance on the process.) To adopt or learn more about this dog, you must complete an adoption application, which can be found on our website: www.sandypawsrescue.com. PLEASE READ: • If a dog or puppy is listed, they are currently available for adoption. However, they may already be pending an adoption, and their profile may not yet reflect this. • All information is accurate to the best of our knowledge as of the posting date. • Unless explicitly stated, Sandy Paws Rescue does not guarantee the breed of any dog. Breeds listed are educated guesses made by shelter staff, volunteers, or veterinarians. Many of our dogs are mixed breeds, often with pit bull-type genetics, resulting in a wide variety of physical traits and temperaments. Our dogs come from various situations, such as kill shelters, owner surrenders, or as strays. It is likely both parents were mixed breeds as well. Sandy Paws Rescue does not have a public shelter in Massachusetts. Our dogs reside in private foster homes or boarding kennels in the South until adopted. Many dogs are spoken for prior to transport or release from state-mandated isolation. For information on adoption fees, procedures, or FAQs, visit our website: www.sandypawsrescue.com. The FIRST step in adopting from Sandy Paws Rescue is to submit a completed adoption application.
