MEET BRIDGETTE!
This newly turned 12-year-old sweet lady is looking for a soft landing after her owner had to let her go related to health issues. Briggy Bear, as her foster mom refers to her, has adapted very well to the multi dog household where she is staying and her confidence has grown even more since arriving Her personality is really starting to shine, just in time to find her forever home!
Bridgette is deaf. This does not impact her quality of life at all, but her new owner should be familiar with safety issues when caring for deaf dogs such as using hand gestures to communicate, avoiding startling Bridgette and using vibrations such as stomping to get her attention. Deaf dogs need to remain on leash when in unsecured areas as they cannot hear dangers or cars. Since Bridgette is not able to hear you calling her back, we will ask any applicant without a fence to keep her on leash for trips outdoors. She does stick pretty close to her foster when in the yard, but safety measures must be at the forefront.
Bridgette is an easy dog. She is house trained, does well on leash, is good in the car and loves being with her person, but is also capable of being independent. She enjoys bully sticks and her licky mat but isn't that big on toys. What you save on toys can be spent on nice comfy beds for her to lounge in.
Bridgette is friendly with other dogs but indifferent to interacting or playing with them, so we think she'd be fine as an only dog or with other dogs who are not in need of a playmate, as long as they listen when she sends out her warning growl to stay away from her food bowl. A calm older dog companion would suit her perfectly.
Bridgette checked out well at the vet! She is a healthy senior. 12 is the new 8! She does well on a leash for short walks but does not navigate the stairs very well. She has a bit of hind end weakness, so keeping her active through daily walks will be important to maintain muscle strength. Consideration that Bridgette may need to be carried up and down stairs as she gets older should be taken. She weighs about 20 pounds. You must be confident enough to push a dog in a stroller in public as well if that is what it takes to keep Bridgette involved in family outings. Given her preference, Bridgette would stay on the couch most of the time, so she doesn't need to accompany you everywhere.
Guess what? She hates having her nails done and loves food. Shocking, we know.
