Peaches came to us as a 'found' dog. She was in pretty rough shape. she was matted, had fleas and was 'bitey' She was sorely neglected. Her ears were so infected they were swollen shut. Our vet suggested she may lose both ear canals. A TECA is a Total Ear Canal Ablation, where the ear canal is surgically removed. But we really wanted to avoid that. So, we began a medical regimen that included medicated baths and ear flushes 3x a week, in addition to antibiotics and steroids. Once her skin was healthy enough, we got her to the surgeon for her very necessary spay. She still gets ear meds to help with some residual inflammation.
