Extinct breed from the Western Alps region that existed for several hundred years and was used as guard dogs and rescue dogs by monks at the Great St. Bernard Hospice. One of the earliest massive mastiff-type breeds from the Alps, it became extinct in the mid-1800s through crossbreeding and was replaced by the Saint Bernard breed which was developed using Alpine Mastiff bloodlines.
