Breed History

Ancient French water dog dating to 16th century, used for centuries to locate, flush and retrieve waterfowl in marshes and rivers. The breed's name derives from 'barbe' meaning beard. Nearly extinct after WWI but revived through dedicated breeding programs. Considered ancestor to several modern breeds including the Poodle and Briard. Officially recognized by the AKC in 2020.
